A pendant featuring an emerald, ruby, sapphire, opal, natural pearl (not tested) and diamond, report

This antique piece of jewellery offers a glimpse into the little-known yet fascinating history of the Beys of Tunis. The Tunisian Beylical regime lasted from the 18th century until the mid-20th century. The Beys, who hailed from the Husseinite dynasty founded by Hussein Bey, were the official rulers of the country. The end of the French protectorate (1881–1956) in Tunisia also marked the end of this ruling dynasty, which was ousted by a republican regime in 1957. According to family tradition, this imposing piece of jewellery was passed down by a Bey of Tunis to the grandfather of its current owner. The bee motif on the pendant symbolises tenacity, fertility and abundance in Berber culture. The inlay technique used for this insect reveals a high level of mastery in the art of glyptics.
