Provenance: we would like to thank Breguet and its archives for providing us with the following information: 3998 gold repeater, silver dial, gold bowl, refurbished and sold on August 22, 1822 to Mr. De Clercy, former watch No. 1453 sold in Spain in 1805.

Although Abraham-Louis Breguet was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, he became the most French of all Swiss watchmakers. Based on the Quai de l'horloge in Paris, he was responsible for some of the finest creations in watchmaking history, such as the famous watch no. 160 commissioned for Queen Marie Antoinette in 1783.
Our example comes from the production of the House of Breguet during the era of its founding father Abraham-Louis, who was accompanied by his son at the end of his career, as evidenced by the signature on the dial Breguet et Fils.
The two dates mentioned in the archives saw a succession of eras, with different customers from the Empire to the Restoration. This longevity enabled Abraham Louis Breguet to become "the king of watchmakers and the watchmaker to kings", as evidenced by the high distinction "Horloger de la Marine Royal" bestowed upon him by the king.
If this watch was first sold in Spain without a prestigious name being mentioned for delivery, we can imagine that it was delivered to an illustrious family such as the Marquise de Santiago (1804).

A gold key winding pocket watch with quarter repeating by Breguet and information from the archives confirming first date of sale in 1805 and then resold by Breguet in 1822
