André Marfaing, born in Toulouse in 1925 and died in Paris in 1987, was one of the leading French figures of the informal painting movement. He became friends with Alfred Manessier and Pierre Soulages in the 1950s, and their direct influence on his work could be tangibly felt from the outset. However, far from being a mere follower, he developed his unique aesthetic, alongside that of the greatest names of his time. Having died at the age of 62, his career did not last as long as the one of Pierre Soulages, but the quality of his work certainly rivals that of the Occitan painter. Long in the shadow of the master of outrenoir, André Marfaing stood out for his contrasting, binary canvases, reflecting a quest for the absolute. He wrote: “Light moves me more than colour”, "Black and white seem to me to have the character of simplicity, absoluteness and rigour that suits me”. This oil on canvas from 1968 is an exemplary illustration of these words: representing the never-ending confrontation between light and darkness, the two 'non-colours' seem to flow towards each other, each invading the space of its antagonist, unable to resolve themselves to a consensual neutrality.
