Alexander “Sandy” Calder was an American painter and sculptor widely recognized for his production of mobiles mobiles, so named by Marcel Duchamp, and his assemblages of shapes, animated by the movement of air. His first drawings were published in the New York press, illustrating various sports events, urban scenes and circus acts. An artist of and lithographer of color, the majority of his work primary colors in geometrically or organically modeled compositions geometric or organic models. His totally abstract compositions compositions give the illusion of a wire drawing, as were his early works. A pioneer of kinetic art and master of modern art, he is renowned for the simplicity of his simplicity of his combinations.
