1956 - Bentley S-Type Continental Sports Saloon « Fastback »
* Coachwork by H. J. Mulliner, no MOT Swiss registration document Car temporarily imported Ordered new by Carven Haute-Couture in Paris One of 26 left-hand-drive S-Type Continental Sport Saloons bodied by H J Mulliner Extensive factory history and documentation, high-quality old restoration Numerous factory-ordered options and upgrades Owned by the french singer Florent Pagny in the 1990s The car offered here, chassis number “BC5LBG”, is one of 26 left-hand-drive S-Type Continental Sport Saloons bodied by H J Mulliner. As confirmed by the extensive accompanying file, this car was ordered new via Franco Britannic Automobiles from SCARP, better known as Parfums Carven, the Haute-Couture house domiciled at 36 rue Beaujon in the 8th arrondissement and still today at Rond-Point des Champs Elysées. According to the factory production records attached to the file, the guarantee was issued on April 18, 1956, and the car was flown to Le Touquet on May 15, to be handed over to Madame Carven’s chauffeur three days later in the capital. From the workshop’s handwritten notes, we know that the car still has its original shade, the superb Shell Grey with tan leather upholstery (tan leather VM846), while special features included a speedometer in kilometers, Marchal head-lights, a foot switch for long ranges, a radio, a blind on the rear window, opening quarter windows and rear seats as wide as possible! According to the old registration documents in our possession, in March 1996 the car was still registered in Paris (0342 FA 75), before joining the personal collection of French singer Florent Pagny on June 18, 1999. The car was then registered in Yvelines and changed its registration (869 BFM 78). An enlightened enthusiast, with a penchant for rare and inte-resting cars, he kept the car until December 18, 2000, when he put part of his collection up for auction. The sale took place at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, and it was on this occa-sion that the current owner purchased the car for the sum of 1,107,640 francs. Anecdotally, correspondence between the new owner and Florent Pagny revealed that the latter had failed to purchase the car three months before the French star became its owner. The accompanying comprehensive history file contains service, repair and maintenance invoices dating from the 2000s to the present day, testifying to a no-cost approach to its upkeep over the years at Garage Classics in Geneva. Aesthetically, the quality of its antique restoration is unmistakable. The paintwork is perfectly taut and the quality of the alignments impeccable. Of course, there are a few chips from road use, but the quality of the restoration is outstanding. The interior is just like the rest of the vehicle, with deliciously distressed, supple leathers and comfortable seats. The woodwork is impeccable, with a varnish that has not budged. Carpeting, door jambs and headli-ning are all to match, as is the fully operational dashboard instrumentation. Equipped with a battery cut-off switch and charge maintainer, the engine starts at the first request. Shifting gears is seamless, and the engine lends a driving comfort that was unrivalled for its time, and is still very much in vogue today. The car is sold with a custom-made cover, its original jack and inflation pump, and its original flashlight attached to the engine bulkhead. Only 218 H.J. Mulliner bodies were produced on S1 Continentals, and only 26 were built with the original left-hand drive. This model, delivered new in France and having been in the hands of one of France’s finest Haute-Couture houses, is a rare opportunity. A car of great elegance, with a sure refinement and a driving pleasure inviting to travel.
