A jadeite, chrysoprase, diamond, enamel, onyx, gold and platinum brooch-pendant, signed Cartier, circa 1925, certificate

In the early 20th century, Louis Cartier (1875–1942) took charge of the Design department and encouraged new sources of inspiration, drawing in particular on his collection of Oriental art. The numerous trips to Asia undertaken by Jacques, the youngest of the Cartier brothers, also influenced the forms and materials used.
Consequently, new coloured gemstones began to adorn Cartier’s Art Deco jewellery. The creations of this period incorporated elements of Asian art such as Bi discs, ornamental motifs and engraved jade plaques. Jade is a material painstakingly crafted by artisans who are the guardians of a millennia-old art.
By using this delicate material in creations designed for the French and European markets, Cartier has achieved an elegant fusion of two forms of exceptional craftsmanship.
