Registered in 1965 for the General de Gaulle's presidential office
Purchased by a close relative of the De Gaulle family, before being sold to the current owner
Old cosmetic restoration to be carried out
Mechanical repairs to be carried out for many years
Certainly the only ex-Presidential franch car available on the market!
The DS Citroën was the brainchild of a team of gifted designers who had the difficult task of succeeding the Traction Avant in 1955. It struck the public with its strikingly modern lines, a masterpiece by Flaminio Bertoni, but it also amazed with its technology and design: hydropneumatic suspension, power steering, disc brakes and semi-automatic gearbox, to name but a few examples. It enjoyed a 20-year career, with a wide variety of models, from the elegant convertible to the utilitarian estate version. It also shone in competition, winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1958. A veritable myth and symbol of French industrial genius at the time, the DS is one of the most collected cars in the world. Enthusiasts can be found driving one on a daily basis in California or even Australia, proof of its great robustness and ease of use.
Perhaps one of the DS’s many roles has left more of an indelible mark than the others: that of Presidents’ car. The car we present on these pages was registered on 2 October 1965 in the name of the “Présidence de la République”, 55, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Paris. It was fitted with a number of special features exclusive to General de Gaulle’s cars: side sun visors for the rear seats, front banner holders hidden in the bumper, roundel holders on the dashboard and a document holder. On November the 7th 1967, the car was sold to Mr B., manager of the Coopérative Laitière in Colombey-les-deux-Eglises, who had been close to the de Gaulle family for many years. The car remained in the same family until 2021!
Mr B.’s son tells us the story of the car: “It was a very discreet car, as it was used by General de Gaulle to travel between the Elysée Palace and his residence in Colombey-les-deux-Eglises!” Today, the car is in fairly average condition and needs a mechanical overhaul. A cosmetic restoration seems to have been carried out many years ago, but unfortunately the quality is not optimal: the most fastidious collectors will no doubt wish to repeat the work. Absolutely unique on the market, this DS presents an exceptional opportunity to get behind the wheel of an authentic presidential DS, and what’s more, one that belonged to the General de Gaulle!
