He went to see his correspondent: "My intention was to speak to you of the views raised by the vacancy at the Académie des belles lettres left by my brother-in-law, the late Mr le Duc de St Aignan. Independently of my taste for letters, I may have some credentials with this Academy. My father had the honor of being a member. I had always wanted to join as an associate. On the present occasion I would be very flattered by the suffrage of the scholars who make up the Academy. I would be most obliged, Sir, if you would kindly inform those of these gentlemen whom you have occasion to see of my wish, and let me know what steps I should take with them"...
