SAINT-EXUPÉRY Antoine de (1900-1944).
Original DRAWING with autograph caption, Roger Beaucaire. Graphite on paper, 17 x 15 cm.
The figure is identified by a title below the drawing. Depicted full-length between two stylized flowers, Roger Beaucaire's features are enlarged, and his nose and lips are prominent.
Alongside a series of highly realistic portraits of his friends (in a notebook entitled Les Copains, cf. Dessins, Gallimard, 2006, p. 58-75), Saint-Exupéry also excelled in caricature (idem, p. 132-146 and p. 166-167). This drawing by Roger Beaucaire is unpublished. The flowers on either side of the figure are identical to those flanking another figure, also sketched in black pencil (idem, no. 211). The baggy pants, tightened at the ankles, are also recognizable elsewhere (notably no. 226).
Fascinated by physics problems, Saint-Exupéry exchanged argumentative correspondence with his friend Roger BEAUCAIRE, notably on a problem involving a barrel "immersed in a fluid" (see Pléiade, II, 1025-1027).
