ROUAULT Georges (1871-1958).
Autograph MANUSCRIT, Art| 4 pages in-fol. with erasures and corrections.
"The greatness of the kingdom is not its beauty, but the love with which it was created! We are kings-fools wiser than real kings and emperors!"... Rouault rages against Arnold BÖCKLIN: "Models taken from German swimming pools! Newts with customs officers' heads and fat girls. It's heavy! fake! painted on linoleum with tones of fireproof oilcloth! [...] The slightest sigh from CÉZANNE makes this Kolossal house of cards crumble!"... He celebrates Chardin, Cézanne or Corot, true creators who do not succumb to "silly and pretentious theories"...
Provenance: former collection of Abbé Maurice MOREL (Ferri sale, December 14, 2005, no. 113).
