First edition of the first play written and published by Jean Racine: La Thébaïde, recounting the Greek myth of the fratricidal feud between the two cursed sons of Oedipus for the throne of Thebes. First performed in 1664 at the Palais Royal theater by Molière's troupe, it was written in a short space of time, and was subsequently reworked. As a result, the original edition contains around a hundred verses that were deleted in subsequent editions.
