[MARIE-LOUISE]. DU ROZOIR Charles (1790-1844).

Éloge de Pie VI, avec l'Histoire religieuse de l'Europe sous son pontificat, accompagné de pièces officielles et de documens authentiques. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1825. In-8, half Russian red leather with corners, crowned numeral in center, smooth spine decorated (Period binding).

First edition, illustrated with a lithographed portrait of Pius VI. History of Pope Pius VI (1775-1799), martyr of the French Revolution, the Directory and the Consulate. After watching helplessly as Berthier's troops entered Rome in February 1798 and the Roman Republic was proclaimed, the pontiff was forced to relinquish his temporal power and leave the Eternal City. Taking refuge in Tuscany, he was captured by the French army and deported to the prison of Valencia, where, after an interminable journey, he died of exhaustion. An illuminating work on the confrontation between the French Republic and Napoleon, beyond the person of Pius VI, and the Papacy. Copy from the library of Marie-Louise in Parma, bound in the cipher of the former Empress of the French. Some brown spots. Spine a little darkened. Provenance: Calvin Bullock (bookplate).
