KAFKA Franz (1883-1924).
The Metamorphosis (Paris, Didier Mutel, 1996). 3 volumes in- 4, bound in grey box, reserve sanding on a typographical composition, bevelled relief shapes on the first cover (François Brindeau, 2001).
Book designed and illustrated by Didier MUTEL, printed in an edition of 60 copies on Arches vellum, this one no. 1.
Signed by D. Mutel and numbered 1 on the receipt.
Illustrated with 24 original copper engravings by Didier Mutel, the book, translated into English by Wille and Edwin Muir, is original in concept, typography and layout. The typeface was created especially for Metamorphosis by Didier Mutel, using fragmented letters as a metaphor for Kafka's story of Gregor Samsa transformed into a giant insect. In Volume 1, vertical marks replace words from the novel. In volumes 1 and 2, several abstract images of Samsa can be seen, but in volume 3, only abstract marks are shown. The words in volume 2 are printed with vertical marks combined with Metamorphosis letters. According to D. Mutel, "it's the story of two worlds. The world of Samsa, who can't meet his family or the outside world [because] there's no communication. When you can read the engravings, you can't read the text, and vice versa".
