Ironic commentary on an article by René DOUMIC ("Littérature et dégénérescence", Revue des deux mondes, January 15, 1894) attacking Symbolist literature and Stéphane MALLARMÉ| Gourmont concludes: "the Doumics - like others - never understand| that is their raison d'être and to open their eyes would be to kill them, - by the horror that the sight of Beauty (I'm talking about M. Mallarmé's Poetry) would cause them".
The manuscript shows erasures and corrections| it was printed, with variants, in the "Journaux et revues" section of the Mercure de France of February 1, 1894 (pp. 185-187).
A L.A.S. (1903) and a portrait of R. de Gourmont are bound at the head| plus a postcard from Jean de Gourmont.
