DAUDET Alphonse (1840-1897). MANUSCRIT partly autograph, Bompard et Tartarin, aventures de deux alpinistes, [Tartarin sur les Alpes, 1884]| 239 small leaves in-4 (21.5 x 17 cm), folioed 1 to 241 (83-84 and 93-94 on one leaf) | midnight-blue morocco binding, ribbed spine, tan morocco lining, green and red morocco mosaic foliage framing, tan faille endpapers, double papier jaspé endpapers, slipcase. Complete manuscript of the novel Tartarin sur les Alpes. A sequel to the adventures of Tartarin de Tarascon, the novel recounts the new exploit of the wildcat hunter, who sets out to conquer the Alpine peaks of the Jungfrau and Mont Blanc... The manuscript bears the original title: Bompard et Tartarin, aventures de deux alpinistes (Bompard and Tartarin, adventures of two mountaineers). Only the first chapter (16 pages) is autograph. The rest of the manuscript is in the hand of his secretary Jules Ebner, to whom Daudet dictated, and bears numerous autograph corrections by Daudet. The manuscript is written in brown ink on the front of the folios, with numerous erasures and corrections| it was used for the printing of the original edition, published under the title Tartarin sur les Alpes. Nouveaux exploits du héros tarasconnais (Calmann-Lévy, "Collection Guillaume", 1885), and bears the typographer's markings in blue pencil. It is divided into 14 chapters, the last, XIV, entitled Epilogue. Bound at the head are: - a portrait of Daudet engraved by Adrien Nargeot| - 2 L.A.S. from Alphonse Daudet to publisher Édouard Guillaume: Champrosay July 25, 1884 (1 p.in-8): "Your offer definitely appeals to me, and I am ready to commit myself to you and your associates for an unpublished novel to illustrate. As you have more business experience than I, please draw up a treaty that we can read and discuss together. My conditions are as follows: a bonus of 25,000 francs will be paid to me when I deliver the first half of my manuscript. I will receive 3 fr. 50 per copy on the 20-franc volume [...] Provisional title: Bompard et Tartarin, ou le Voyage en Suisse"... March 10, 1885 (1 p. in-12): "Tartarin is in Interlaken, and wants to go to Montreux. What railroad does he take, and where does he go to get there quickly?" - An autograph receipt signed by Daudet, Paris December 30, 1885: "Reçu de MM.Guillaume la somme de vingt mille francs"...
