CASSATT Mary (1844-1926). 2 L.A.S., [Paris 1911], to art critic Achille SEGARD| 3 and 2 pages in-8 at her address 10 rue de Marignan (mourning).

To the future author of Mary Cassatt, a painter of children and mothers (Ollendorff, 1913). October 18 [1911]. She asks him to excuse his delay in replying: "The truth is that I am at the moment a poor sick woman, unable to take care of anything. After a winter spent in Egypt I had the great sorrow of losing the last member of my family in Paris last spring [her brother Gardner]. The whole thing was too much for me, and I am only now beginning to emerge from a nervous breakdown that has robbed me of all strength"... She only passes through Paris to see a doctor, and puts off the pleasure of seeing him. "As for what Mr. Destrées told you, it's a mistake I only own one of my paintings, and I don't think it's among the best. Messrs. DURAND-RUEL know much better than I do where my paintings are, and there are also pastels at M. VOLLARD 6 rue Lafitte"... She asks him to respond to the memory of CLEMENCEAU. "I hope he still retains his great vitality and energy. Men in America go off so happily struck down by struggle at sixty. How much wiser we are here"... Thursday. She returned on Tuesday and will be pleased to see him, in the early afternoon, "as I am obliged to get some fresh air when the weather is fine"...
