Sand completed the writing of Plutus, " étude d'après le théâtre antique ", in five acts and a prologue, on November 15, 1862| the play appeared in 1863 in the January 1, 1863 issue of the Revue des deux mondes, then was collected the following year in the volume of Théâtre de Nohant. Freely inspired by Aristophanes' Ploutos and Lucian's Timon, it composes a socio-political allegory, mixed with a love story, on the merit of work versus idle wealth.
The play features Plutus, god of wealth, the landowner Chrémyle, the god Mercury, Poverty, Bactis and Carion, slaves of Chrémyle, and Myrto, daughter of Chrémyle, in love with Bactis. Bactis and Myrto end up following the advice of Poverty.
