Preface for Les Liaisons dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos, published by Stendhal, in 1932.
This manuscript, which presents some erasures and corrections, is written on the back of paper with the letterhead of the Commission d'Evaluation des Dommages subis en Turquie.
This brilliant and subtle study opens with an admirable picture of the literature and sensibility of the end of the 18th century: "Around 1782, the ending century could hope to leave no too scandalous proof of its freedom. What it was going to leave to the new century, after sixty years of dryness and cunning, was Manon Lescaut and the New Heloise. A perfumed and wrapped Moll Flanders, two naive and moreover Swiss heroes, such were going to be for the posterity the official family pictures of Lassay or Richelieu. There are kinds of civilization which were secrets, which remained secrets, which did not betray any of the thousands or millions of beings who participated in them. The evidence of the eighteenth century, the frankness of its morals, the complete devotion of soul to which it had reached risked to remain secrets, thanks to the courtesy and the obsequiousness of the oral courtesy, as well as to the connivance, bought or unconscious, of the writers "... Maiiiiiss, with the publication of Les Liaisons dangereuses, "the bad reputation of the century was started", and this book remains "the only French novel that gives you the impression of danger"...
