ATTRIBUÉ À L'ATELIER D'ANDRÉ-CHARLES BOULLE (1642-1732)
Pair of chased ormolu sconces, mask model. The console is in the form of a curved cartouche with a background of semis of bouterolles, foliage and flowers. The large mask of a young man is framed by foliage, from which emerges a curved acanthus-leaf arm. Louis XIV or Régence period, first quarter of the 18th century.
Height: 26 cm-Width: 16 cm-Depth: 28 cm (Wear, cast iron defects, holes for electricity)
This pair of sconces with masks can be associated with the repertoire of André-Charles Boulle, who created a large number of masks to compose or adorn his creations. The general aesthetic of the mask inscribed in an escutcheon is not far removed from that found on the large cartouche of the tables with dolphins and brandons delivered for the Duchess of Burgundy and now preserved at Bowhill Castle, as well as the one that adorned the sides of the Ashburnham desk.
