RARE THEODOLITE BY JAMES SIMONS the copper (formerly gold-plated) bezel is adjustable in both planes as well as in length for focusing. The inclination is graduated on a quarter-circle engraved "Links / Chain". The bezel surmounts a bousole richly engraved with fleurons and a fleur-de-lys, with spirit level. The silver-plated compass plate is signed J.Simons London. Horizontal orientation is calculated on a full circle engraved at 360 degrees. The entire instrument rests on a rotating pivot. England, London, George III period, circa 1770.
