Brass MULETIER PLATE engraved with a front bishop standing, mitted, and holding an arrow and his crozier. Engraved inscription: "JAPARTIENS A LOUIS RICAR E MARIE REBO". Languedoc or Savoy, late 18th century.
Diameter: 15 cm (Pompon reported, hinge missing, small scratches)
Before the development of roads and the arrival of trains, large convoys of mules crossed the mountains, mainly those of the Massif Central, to transport foodstuffs and manufactured goods. Muleteers loved to adorn their animals with gleaming copper plates adorned with brightly-colored pompons. Two plates served as blinkers, while the third was placed on the animal's forehead. They often marked ownership, and featured maxims, sayings or references to the political life of the time.
