EXHIBITION
Our icon was featured in No. 35 of the reference exhibition "Melkite Icons" at the Nicolas Sursock Museum in Beirut, May 16-June 15, 1969.
The icon is pleasing in its composition: the liveliness of the colors and the ornamentation of the background and borders. Note the realism of the flowing blood, the prophets' headdresses, the shape of the scimitar, the faces with oriental features, all elements typical of Melkite iconography. The author: Kyrillos al Musawwir was an icon-painting priest of the Basilian order, whose work was mainly produced in the second half of the 18th century. As indicated in the bottom right-hand corner with the word "waqf", these were commissioned in memory of the deceased (a kind of "ex voto") and donated to the church for its iconostasis.
