JOSEPH PIERRE CHINARD (1756 - 1813)
Child bust portrait of François Alexis Guiffrey, three years old. Terracotta. Signed on the front: Chinard in Lyon. Dated on the side : Ventôse an XI. Label on the back 98.
Height : 42,5 cm - Width : 24,5 cm Depth : 15,5 cm (Slightly missing)
François Alexis Guiffrey, born on 4 Floréal of the year VII (April 23, 1799) in Lyon was the son of François Guiffrey notable hatter merchant of Lyon and of his wife born Victoire Aimée Caminet. He died in Lyon on 18 ventôse of year XI (9 march 1803) at the age of 3 years and six months. His father immediately commissioned Chinard to paint a portrait of his deceased child, which we know was made from a cast "sur nature". It took Joseph Pierre Chinard only 22 days to create this bust, as proven by the receipt signed by the sculptor dated 10 germinal of year XI (31 march 1803). [see Nouvelles Archives de l'Art Français, 1873, p.438]. "Mr... owes Chinard sculptor for work done in plaster and clay, namely :
- For molding on nature and executing in clay a bust of a child: 300 #.
- For the mold in plaster: 36 #.
- To cast one in clay including the repair and the wormhole: 24 #.
Total: 360 # For the plaster mold: 36
For aquit in Lyon this 10 Germinal year XI
Signed Chinard".
From this receipt we understand that Chinard produced two busts in clay of the Guiffrey child, one of which seems to be a reworking of the other.
At the time of the Chinard retrospective of 1909, the bust we present was exhibited next to another bust of a child (at n°46) belonging to Mme Doucet and designated as the presumed portrait of Camille Jordan's son. The latter was of comparable dimensions to ours, also signed Chinard and also dated Ventôse of the year XI. It is most certainly the other version of the portrait of the Guiffrey child. The Bulletin de la Société de l'histoire de l'art français of 1909 reports: "The child bust catalogued under n°46 (son of Camille Jordan) is identical, with a few variations, to the one designated under n°57 (Guiffrey child)".
The bust of the former Doucet collection was then in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Viguier (sale in Paris, Mes Ader-Picard, Palais Galliera, March 21, 1968).
