The bird motif became hugely popular in jewellery from the 1940s onwards. After the Second World War, it became a powerful symbol. All the major jewellery houses featured it, from Van Cleef & Arpels to Mauboussin, via Marchak, Chaumet and Cartier.
Realistic, articulated, in flight, in their nests, on a branch or in a cage, birds were primarily depicted as brooches. They brought a great diversity of shapes, lines and colours to jewellery design. The designer Peter Lemarchand, having honed his eye at Vincennes Zoo, was able to translate the birds he had observed into flamboyant jewellery for Cartier.
