Rare hasami-bako travel case in maki-e gold lacquer on a black background, decorated with young pine shoots emerging from rocks punctuated with eight large Ii clan blazons (fruit and tachibana leaves). The large central fittings and spandrels in gilt bronze chiseled with the Ii clan coat of arms among the foliage.
The inside of the lid in nashiji lacquer, the inside of the chest in black lacquer.

NOTE
The Ii clan, close to the Tokugawa shogun, was one of the most powerful clans of the Edo period. As a reward for their loyalty to the Tokugawa, they obtained the important fief and castle of Hikone in the province of Omi.
