TERESA DE AVILA (1515 - 1582) Sainte
Autograph note (fragment), [Toledo 1576]| in Spanish| 53 x 73 mm recto-verso, under a double-sided black wooden display frame.
A very rare and valuable fragment of Saint Teresa.
It is preserved in a small black wooden display case in the shape of a tabernacle| on the lower part, on one side, an inscription on paper: "Carta scritta di mano della nostra Santa Madre Teresa di Gesù"| on the other side, small relics resting on a red velvet cushion, with a small banner bearing the inscription: "Ex Ossib S. Adiuti
Protomartyris Ord. S. Francisci" [St. Adiutus (Adjute) was one of the first five Franciscan martyrs killed in Morocco in 1220| their relics were brought back to Portugal shortly afterwards, and much venerated before their canonization in 1481]. The tabernacle was probably assembled by or for a Carmelite nun, venerating Teresa as a Holy Mother| it is sealed on both sides with four red wax seals bearing the arms of an unidentified cardinal.
At the head of the autograph of St. Teresa, an ancient inscription: "Carta scita a mano della ... Teresa".
Free translation: Having begun to confess to someone in the city where I am now, and this person, having put a lot of good will after taking charge of the government of my soul, ended up departing [She took on a new director of conscience| this man, who had expressed the desire to take care of her and was doing so with good will, ended up not coming to see her anymore. Verso: my soul with a person from the same place. I was afraid to have to know a new state, which could be that he would not understand me and would worry me and love me...]
