Important correspondence from the Fresnes prison.
In the course of these long letters, Hardy proclaims his innocence, tells of his life in his cell, comments on his reading, etc. We will only quote the first letter.
May 5, 1947. "Don't apologize for any intrusion into my life, at the moment, there is only one pleasure for me, and that is to receive letters, it is the only link that ties me to the world. I am indeed in the quarter of the condemned to death, dressed of bure, alone without contact with the men. [...] You were right to believe that I did not commit any baseness, I fought, throughout these six years, as best I could. I have dealt the enemy hard blows, at no time has this will to fight abandoned me. Today I am waiting in disenchantment for someone to decide my fate. The fight is unequal but I will fight until the end with the strength that a peaceful conscience gives me"... (Defects to some letters)
