WAR OF 1870. PHILATELIA Set of 15 letters transported by diplomatic bags, October 1870-January 1871.
Exceptional set of letters transported by diplomatic bags.
Only the American ambassador in Paris, E.B. Washburne, was authorized by Bismarck to carry his diplomatic bags across the lines in exchange for the protection given to Prussian nationals in France.
Currently, 39 letters transported in this way have been recorded. Only 25 are in private collections. 15 of these 25 letters or envelopes are proposed here.
