TOLSTOI Léon (1828 - 1910)
L.A.S. "L. Tolstoy", [Moscow ?] February 12, 1896, to Lyubov Yakovlevna
GUREVICH| 3 pages in-8 (splits at middle fold)| in Russian.
Lyubov Yakovlevna GUREVICH (1866 - 1940) was Russia's most important female literary journalist| she was the editor of the journal Severny Vestnik (The Northern Herald), the hotbed of Russian Symbolism, in St. Petersburg (1894 - 1917), to which Tolstoy contributed.
The letter refers to an incident and the inappropriate behavior of a man visiting Gurevich. Loose translation: "You say that you are frightened by boasts on his part, and slander, and I deeply regret that this matter cannot be brought out and made public as it should. People will only feel sorry for him, this poor, young wanderer, who, having acted with the vilest baseness, was sure to act nobly. (I use the past tense because I am sure that even before leaving your apartment, his conscience had begun to torment him). This matter cannot be made public only because you do not want it to be and because it would be self-sufficient and detrimental to the dignity of your actions, the basis of which is humility"... He goes on to mention the differences in public perception of such an event, depending on whether you are a woman or a man, "because of the absurdity always inherent in our morals.
He said that he showed his letter to another person, Pavel Biruykov, and concluded: "Just keep thinking and acting the same way and the joy in your soul will grow. I am very, very happy for you.
May God help us to fulfill his will. Love to you"...
