"Main characters" of the famous tragedy on Henri III to which Stendhal worked
Stendhal worked on without succeeding in completing it. Stendhal notes here the names and characters of six characters, with the names of the actors opposite: "Henri III 37 years old, thin - Mr Michelot. Valentine 26 years, Miss Mars" etc.
Then Stendhal adds this note, dated "9 Sept. : "Reasoning on the Plan. In a duel if all the blows were parried one would not finish and however all the Duels finish, it is that finally a blow is badly parried. Here is what you have to say when you criticize the plan of a tragedy".
This manuscript is written on the back of a L.A.S. from Virginie ANCELOT (1783 - 1842), inviting "Monsieur Beyle" to come to the Vaudeville and to bring Mérimée there.
