STENDHAL (1783 - 1842)
L.A.S. "Henry", this Friday 18 [January 1812], to his sister
Pauline Périer, in Grenoble| 1 page in-4, address (annotation in ink at the head of the letter).
Beautiful letter to his sister Pauline, about the new mission with which he has just been charged. [Auditor at the Conseil d'État since 1810 and inspector of the accounting of the furniture of the Crown under the orders of the Duke of Cadore, Stendhal has just been charged with the inventory of the Napoleon Museum]. "My dear friend, today's Moniteur will redouble the friendship of all the family's acquaintances in Grenoble. But I fear a little for the success of all the hopes it will raise. What I want is to have nothing to do with the success of the projects that will be formed. I have already hung the title of Charlatan, what would it be in the future? Tell people who, by chance, would talk to you about me, that I promised not to ask for anything, not to hand in any letter, and that I am determined to keep my promise strictly. I would rather be considered selfish than a charlatan. I am not employed at the service of His Excellency the Master Sre d'Etat, I remain at the Civil List, so I can only love those who really love me and wish them success". He signs of his first name: "Henry".
He adds in margin of the letter: "I wait impatiently for news of Madame Eulalie, presents my respects to our Beyle cousins".
