STAËL Germaine Necker, baronne de (1766 - 1817)
L.A.S. "Necker Staël de Holstein" (minute), Coppet August 26, 1804| 2 1/2 pages in-4 with erasures and corrections.
About the repayment of the loan made by his father to Louis XVI.
A few months after the death (April 9, 1804) of her father Jacques NECKER, she recalls the history of this loan.
"I accept your word Sir not to meddle with my business in a way which can harm it"... She recalls the promise made to help him to reach a favorable solution in the famous affair of "the most sacred debt of the world", that of the loan of two millions that Necker had made to Louis XVI towards the end of his reign. "In the manuscripts of my father and the notes on his life which are going to be published you will still find facts on the history of this debt which will strike you [...] There is undoubtedly some frankness in the way you express yourself with me, but I will have the honor to observe to you that in the situation in which I am [Bonaparte had forbidden him
Paris and even the rest of France since 1803] not being able to treat myself a cause on which the fortune of my children depends, having for me only the moral force of the memory of my father and against me many real forces, courage can only consist in serving me. I hope therefore that your excellence will take care of my interests only in this sense, and I call again all his attention on a question more historical than financial".
