SAINT-PIERRE Bernardin de (1737 - 1814)
L.A.S. "Bernardin de Saint Pierre", Paris, June 1, 1807, to Mme Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, in Éragny-sur-Oise| 2 1/2 pages in-8, address.
Beautiful letter to his wife.
He gives news to his "dear angel". He was invited to the blessing of Mr. Rigault's wedding and attended "the mass and the blessing at
St. Sulpice and from there they took me to dinner at daybreak near the Jardin des Plantes, there were fifteen of us who made up the two families. New compliments for you, especially since they were very sorry. The two spouses of the girl often repeat that you were the cause of their happiness". He spent "a charming day. I only left at night, driven back two or three boulevards by a part of the company. I then went through all this beautiful enclosure under the trees and on the ground, in a delicious darkness, until the Invalides". After a few errands, he comes to his work: "I have been busy touching up a few useless notes of the preamble of my Chaumière indienne, and I have made up for it by clarifications on the floating mirrors, they will at least have the merit of novelty". He saw a nice play at the
Vaudeville, Les Pages du Duc de Vendôme : "they are mostly charming girls dressed as boys, but I find you even more amiable". He spares himself "because I want you to find me in good health on Thursday evening. [...] Kiss our charming Virginie, our happy little Paul, and your excellent mother [...] For you, you will have all of me".
A note on the letter indicates that it was given by the "joyful Paul" on September 7, 1821, and an attached bill from M. Alph. de Fontvanne indicates its provenance.
A photograph of Lucien CLERGUE is attached.
