MANUSCRIT autograph signed "F. Ponge" and corrected typescript, Le Verre d'eau, 1948| 40 and 38 pages in-4, and 60 pages in-4| in a triple system box| each of the three parts placed in a midnight blue box compartment lined with blue-gray nubuck with sliding plexiglass windows that allow the documents to be seen| these three compartments are assembled to form a single full box with an arched spine| the title, mosaic of ivory box on each part, is read in its entirety when they are joined together| these three compartments are themselves inserted in a second box with hinges of blue-night box with white dots| the back in arc of circle carries the title mosaic of ivory box and opens in the way of a double-door to let appear the first box (Renaud Vernier, 1984)
Precious set of the preparatory manuscripts of Le Verre d'eau with the working typescript for the edition, in a remarkable system case by Renaud Vernier.
Ponge wrote Le Verre d'eau in 1948, for his collaboration with
Eugène de KERMADEC whose first illustrated book it was, in 41 lithographs| the book was published in 1949 by the Louise-Leiris Gallery, under the title Le Verre d'eau. Collection of notes and lithographs. In 1961, Ponge collected Le Verre d'eau, true diary of a poetic creation, in Le Grand Recueil, Méthodes (Gallimard, 1961). The manuscript is presented in two parts.
"Le Verre d'eau. Original manuscript of Part I", inscribed by Ponge on a folded folder: 39 in-4 or in-fol. pages (ca. 27 x 21 cm) autographed in black ink and 1 typed page with an autograph title, written on the front, with a hundred or so erasures, corrections and additions (some edges slightly frayed) The notes are dated from March 9 to September 5, 1948. Plus a cover sheet on strong salmon paper with this autograph mention: "Le Verre d'Eau - Pour la Galerie
Louise Leiris with lithos in color of Eugène de Kermadec - Paris-
St Léger en Yvelines 1948".
Spiral schoolbook (blue cover, 22 x 17,5 cm). 38 pages written in black ink on 33 sheets of squared paper with small squares, in a first draft cursive writing. The notes are dated from August 29 to September 30, 1948| about fifteen words or groups of words crossed out and corrected and about fifteen additions. One notes in particular: "Chose à dire à Limbour" (29.VIII), the "Plan du Verre d'Eau" and the "Plan du milieu et de la fin du discours" (30.VIII), etc.
Typescript by the author with autograph corrections (60 pages in-4 typed, preceded by 1 page in-4 with the autograph mention "ICI Le Verre d'Eau". 2 pages have been entirely crossed out. This typescript was used for the printing of the book| it bears numerous autograph indications to the typographer. About fifty erasures, corrections or additions. An autograph note "Note pour la composition en placards" in blue and red pens (1 p. in-4, torn in the height). With 2 notes concerning the proofs. Plus a L.S. from the publisher and gallery owner Daniel-Henri KAHNWEILER to Francis Ponge (2 p.
in-4 on the letterhead of the Galerie Louise Leiris), 19-7-49| and a L.S. from René
MICHA to Francis Ponge, Brussels 24 July 1958.
