MOUNIER Emmanuel (1905 - 1950)
L.A.S. "E. Mounier", February 8 [1940, to Francisque GAY]| 12 pages in-8 (slight cracks in the folds).
Important confidential letter from the founder of the journal Esprit to the director of L'Aube, on the subject of Christian involvement in politics.
Following an article letter of Touchard which provoked a strong reaction of Gay: "What in the letter, aimed, summarily, the "democrats of Christian inspiration", you know well [...] that they are extremely diverse, and that L'Aube has always represented for us the best of them. [...]
That was worth at most, it seems to me, a small private shouting match, and two words of correction in a press review. About Esprit, he reproached Gay for making of it "a sort of advanced, original, courageous wing of Christian democracy", which did not correspond to the reality, Esprit gathering very diverse men. If Esprit and Aube feel certain affinities, there are also "clear divergences.
Why hide it from us? The faults common to the democrats are also common to the Christian Democratic parties. They have too often compromised the subordination of politics to morality in a kind of moralism from which we feel the need to draw today a spirituality on the one hand, a politics on the other hand more clearly"...
