MAUPASSANT Guy de (1850-1893)
Autograph poem signed "Guy de Maupassant", [Promenade à seize ans, 1869 ?]| 1 page in-8 on the letterhead of the Pension LEROy-pETIT Rue de l'Avalasse 15 bis, Rouen (small cracks and tears without missing).
Poem of youth, collected in Des Vers.
This poem of 28 verses is written on the paper of the Rouen pension
Leroy-Petit, where Maupassant had been placed, after his dismissal from the college of Yvetot, and while he was attending the Lycée Corneille of Rouen in the school year 1868 - 1869. In 1880, Maupassant collected it in Des Vers (Charpentier, 1880). This original manuscript presents variants with the published text.
"The earth smiled at the blue sky, the green grass
Of drops of dew was still covered.
Everything was singing in the world as well as in my heart. [...]
Our parents chatted about the peace of the war
Or prose or verse, I don't know what.
She was picking flowers, and walking near me... [...]
For me I saw nothing, except that she was beautiful.
Then she sang... How much I liked her voice !!!
It was necessary to return and to cross the wood. [...]
Sometimes without speaking to me she raised her eyes
Then it seemed to me (I am perhaps mistaken)
That in our young hearts our glances gave birth
Many other thoughts, and that they spoke softly
Much better than us, saying what we did not dare".
