KOTZEBUE August von (1761 - 1819)
L.A.S. "Kotzebue", Frankfurt 2 May 1791, [to Ludwig Ferdinand
HUBER, in Mainz]| 2 pages in-8 filled with a small, tight handwriting| in German.
Very beautiful and witty letter.
"During the exodus of the Jews from Egypt, they took gold and silver vessels with them in gratitude to their benefactors| they excused their action by stating that they were acting according to the will of God. If I, on the other hand, were to say that God had told me to take the enclosed book, I would be lying. That is why I am returning it to you.
The parable is not true on all sides, because the writings of [Johann
Thimotheus] HERMES are not golden, I am not a Jew, Mrs. [Therese] FORSTER is not an Egyptian, Mainz is not on the Red Sea and Frankfurt is not Canaan. The parable is only accurate in the sense that I too am grateful to Mrs. Forster for all those hours of
Mrs. Forster for all the delightful hours I have spent in her house. He instructs his friend to express his gratitude: "Tell her that I shall wait patiently until she deigns to come after me on horseback and in carriage. I am a man to let myself be caught up willingly, because I wander aimlessly, and I am guided neither by the fiery column of love nor by the dull one of friendship"...Then he evokes Sophie de LA ROCHE : "In her heart she is still not 60 years old. I once attended a ballet where Amor rejuvenated old women with the help of a large windmill. How I wish Mrs. La Roche would be treated like that, for I would know very well what else I could want. Lotte writes me that she is going to marry a business owner, who would be a hothead. All is well between her and the hothead| however, the hothead's father, no doubt a former hothead, seems less decided| so that I fear that in the end all the fire will become water again"... He announces the arrival of Friedrich Ludwig SCHRÖDER: "We had built him a beautiful throne, on which he was supposed to sit, and we wanted to surround him with deference| but he climbed the canopy, which made us laugh"...
