HUGO Victor (1802 - 1885)
L.A.S. "Victor", Paris August 27, 1821, to Count Alfred de VIGNY "officer at the 5th regt of the guard in Rouen"| 3 pages and a quarter in-8 and address (small tear at the last leaf due to broken seal).
Superb letter to Vigny, whom Hugo had met in October 1820.
The letter opens with a beautiful declaration of friendship: "I need to embrace you and to tell you with my voice and my eyes how much I love you| I have missed you for so long| I don't know if you feel it as I do, all the friends present are less than an absent friend, it even seems in a way that there is also something absent in each of them. I would not be surprised if an invalid took the leg he lost more than the body he kept"...
He then evokes the tragedy inspired by the Roland furieux that Vigny was writing, and that he will end up destroying: "What do you do with the Muses over there? They make nothing of me here. Your great Roland often wanders in my imagination, and he does not need, like Homer's gods, three steps to find the limits. You did not send me this walk so promised and so desired, your excuse is bad, you know that there is only you who can be dissatisfied with what you make, there is only you who can despise the eagle near its sun". The young Hugo seems to cross a crisis of inspiration which he will hardly know any more in the continuation of his career: "The Muses flee a worried soul. I am quite agitated, quite tormented, and tormented by a flat calm. I cannot swim across the river, it is necessary to wait until it has flowed. Patience in me is not reconciled with life| I conceive patience in the grave". Finally, he closes his letter with a dig at the Academy, of which both of them will later be members: "I attended the day before yesterday the session of the Academy. Why weren't you there? You would have admired the courage with which one crowns platitudes, well correct and well polished. Never the genius (I except Soumet) will succeed near the Academies| a torrent frightens them, they crown a bucket of water"...
