CÉLINE Louis-Ferdinand (1894 - 1961)
L.A.S. "LC", Sunday [22 August 1948], to Charles DESHAYES| 3 pages in-fol.
On the failure of his pamphlet Les Beaux Draps.
"Here is a very good one. Les Beaux Draps has indeed had an icy reception... Silence in the collaborating press except for a scathing review in the N[ouveau]x Temps by Espiau. One expected a piece of bravery... From that moment I was considered by the hardliners as a quitter and a more than "shady" communist!!! The denunciations in this sense addressed to the Gestapo and the Kommandantur never ceased during the entire occupation and at Sigmaringen! My colleague Jacquot and I were only known as defeatists. The P.P.F. henchmen only talked about murdering us as traitors. Eight days later it was done. I do not speak to say nothing. At a conference for Sigmaringen's intellectuals (!) in the town hall, presidents Déat, Sieburg, Noztitz, etc., were present to boost their morale... etc...
I reserve the right to quote the names of those present if I am given the slightest hint of a denial and other things as well. I am gifted with the relentless memory of idiots (You can warn). I have spoken out strongly and publicly against this shameless brainwashing, and I have proposed the immediate creation of a Society of Friends of Père Lachaise. Who says better? Who says the opposite? It was easy to mock the Germans in London or Algiers. But Sigmaringen? There is nothing left to do but laugh"...
