ARTAUD Antonin (1896 - 1948)
L.A.S. "Ant. Artaud", [Paris] July 26, 1932, to André ROLLAND DE RENÉVILLE in Noizay| 2 pages in-4, envelope.
Beautiful letter about the theater.
Artaud had published an article in Paris-Soir entitled "Le théâtre que je vais fonder" (The theater I'm going to found)| he reacts here to the letter he then received from Renéville: "You must be really quite crazy to write me such a letter. [...] you wrote me a wonderful letter| and I was wondering, I was still wondering if I would answer it directly or by sending a manifesto. [...] I am prodigiously bored by the writing of this manifesto that I cannot put together. [...]
Besides, it is wrong to talk about manifestos, there are too many manifestos and not enough works. Too many theories and not enough actions. The ideas of the theater that I want to make are contained in the Alchemical Theater and in the Staging and Metaphysics. [...] There is no need to condemn the current theater, which condemns itself and whose inconsistencies are doing justice. A theater with which the cinema can fight is a specifically dead theater.
It seems to be enough to ask oneself what is the deep goal of the theater, and its reason for being in life to realize that to this goal (that some of us consider as transcendent to the highest point) the cinema cannot answer"...
