ALEMBERT Jean Le Rond d' (1717 - 1783)
L.A.S. "Dalembert", following LECLERC DE LA BRUÈRE and Mme GEOFFRIN, [ca. 1746], to Mlle LEMERY| 2 1/2 pages in-4, addressed with red wax seal of arms.
Curious letter with three hands.
It is Charles-Antoine LECLERC DE LA BRUÈRE (1714 - 1754) who begins this three-handed letter, explaining that he could not see Mlle Lemery the day before, because he was accompanying Mme de Pontchartrain to the Opera. While waiting to court her, he asks for news and warns her that he will not be able to dispose of the box if M. de Maurepas comes to Paris... Then
Madame GEOFFRIN takes the pen after this "very interesting subject", to give it up "to one which is much more interesting, I limit myself to present you our respects. The impatience of Mr. Dalemberg reproaches me this small number of lines"...
Then it is d'Alembert, who plays with gallantry and style: "I am a river, Madam, for any other than you| if you absolutely wanted me to be, I could only be the river Alpheus: if you wanted to be my Arethusa I would follow you not only in the underworld, but in all the worlds mentioned by M. de Fontenelle. I would like you to stop in the planet of Venus. Respect stops me. For my imagination could go astray| and I limit myself to assuring you of the extreme zeal of your most submissive slave"...
