Contemporary red morocco, ornate smooth spines, triple fillet on the boards, brown morocco title and greeks, gilt inner boards, gilt edges, blue paper endpapers.
Famous edition called "des Fermiers généraux".
Commissioned by the Fermiers généraux, it is considered as one of the most perfect productions of the 18th century printing, and the masterpiece of Charles Eisen. The illustration includes 2 portraits (La Fontaine after Rigaud, engraved by Ficquet and Eisen after Vispré, engraved by Ficquet), 80 plates after Eisen engraved by
Aliamet, Baquoy, Flipart, Lafosse, Lemire and Longuet, 4 vignettes and 53 culs-de-lampe by Choffard.
A first edition copy, including the Mona Lisa with the two figures removed from the other states, the figures of the Case of Conscience (II, p. 143) and the Devil of Papefiguière (II, p. 149) in the uncovered state, Feronde or Purgatory without the cap (vol. II, p. 157), The Remedy with the floor, the bed and the ornamented curtains (vol. II, p. 259).
Moreover, Le Cocu battu et content (vol. I, p. 23) is here engraved by Longueil and not by Leveau.
