EINSTEIN Albert (1879-1955)
MANUSCRIT autograph signed "A. Einstein", Zur einheitlichen Feldtheorie. Fortsetzung zu der gleichnamigen Arbeit| 6 pages in-4 (plus one in photocopy)| in German.
Unpublished manuscript on unified field theory, with calculations and equations. This is a working draft which, as its title indicates, was intended as a continuation and amplification of the article on unified fields published in the Sitzungsberichte der preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in 1929. As Einstein explains at the beginning, this work was motivated by a communication from Lanczos and Müntz, who had pointed out that his equations were incomplete ("beim Nachdenken über die mögliche Verbesserung zeigte es sich, dass das System der Feldgleichungen noch nicht vollständig war"... when reflecting on possible improvement, it turned out that the system of field equations was not yet complete). After his introductory remarks, Einstein gives a section title 1 "Über die für die Theorie wichtigen Identitäten" (On identities important for the theory), which continues on page 5. This page bears his signature and was clearly intended for the end of the article. However, page 4 (in photocopy) is crossed out and the second page 5, also crossed out, seems to represent a later stage of work on the previous material. It would appear that even while working on this manuscript, Einstein had become dissatisfied with his approach and had begun to look for alternatives. The present work may have been discarded in favor of another paper, entitled Einheitliche Feldtheorie und Hamiltonsches Prinzip, submitted to the Preussische Akademie der Wissenschaften in March 1929 (and published then in the Sitzungsberichte, pp. 156-159) in which Einstein acknowledged the criticisms made by Lanczos and Müntz. Calculations on the back of p. 1 and p. 5| p. 4 in photocopy.
