CHEVREUL Eugène (1786-1889)
L.A.S., November 29, 1875, to Charles JOURDAIN| 4 pages in-4 on the letterhead of the Museum of Natural History.
Interesting letter about the Gobelins factory. He recalls that he was called to the council of fine arts as a member of the Academy of Sciences, that he has belonged to the Gobelins for nearly fifty years, and that, "in 1871, 82 m. of buildings burned down by the commune were still smoking! when all the people attached to the factory named three delegates to ask the government of Versailles for my appointment as administrator. He had told Charles Blanc that it was his "imperious duty" to accept this position in these difficult times. Shortly afterwards he received a letter announcing his dismissal. It was certainly difficult to be both administrator of the Gobelins and director of the Museum. He recalls that he entered the Gobelins as "Director of Dyes", and evokes his salary... " The question relating to the director of the dyeings of Gobelins is presented under a double aspect| that of the national manufactures of fabrics and that of the industry of the country where national. The director must know everything that is related to the structure of woven fabrics from the point of view of the direction of the threads and the effects that result with regard to the reflection of light, he must know all the effects of the mixtures of colored threads "... etc. He also evokes the role that the Gobelins could play in "the interest of manufacturing cities"... Etc
