L.S. "Melvin Calvin" as Director of the Chemical Biodynamics Laboratory, Berkeley, California July 26, 1978, to Carl DAVIS| 2 pages in-4 typewritten, letterhead University of California.

Thoughts on the future of chemistry, to honor a professor of physics on his 100th birthday. He imagines that Davis has something in common with the physics teacher he himself once had at Detroit Central High School, and he hopes that he is interested in the future of Science. Chemistry seems to be at a critical phase in its history, creating risks and disadvantages unknown in the past, even as it creates new materials and contributes to the food and health of humanity... But it is also in crisis, having lost some of its scientific identity to physics and biology, and having lost its character as an empirical science... After half a century of creating molecules, we are just beginning to understand the laws of valence and non-valence: this will be the work of the next decades...
