VERLAINE PAUL (1844-1896)
ERRATUM:
Unframed piece.
Original DRAWING, signed on the right side: "Van der Verlaine fecit 1893. 5 rue de Phalsburg"| ink and pen| 18 x 23 cm (framed).
Amusing self-portrait as a monkey.
The drawing represents a couple of monkeys in conversation. A large monkey, dressed in a jacket and crouching, has Verlaine's head. Opposite him, a small monkey, naked, is standing. Underneath, three studies of simian heads, with Verlaine's features. On the right, another face, in profile. This characteristic of Verlaine's physical appearance was notably underlined by his friend Edmond Lepelletier in Paul Verlaine, sa vie son œuvre (1907): "Aged, his ungainly and bizarre physiognomy, asymmetrical, with his humped skull and his stubborn nose, still seemed bearable. One saw her shining with the brightness of the spirit, and haloed by the radiance of the talent. One became accustomed to his faunistic mask when he laughed, to his sinister aspect when he remained serious [...]. But, in his youth, he was grotesquely ugly| he resembled, not the mongoloid type, as has been said, but a monkey, and his baboonish originality could only inspire in a woman he met a feeling of distance, of repugnance, perhaps of fear and disgust.
