SAINT-EXUPÉRY Antoine de (1900-1944)
L.A.S. "Antoine", [Orconte (Marne) late 1939 or early 1940, to Jane LAWTON| 4 pages in-8.
Beautiful and tender letter to his American friend.
[Assigned on November 26, 1939 to the strategic reconnaissance group II/33, based at Orconte, he remained there until June 9, 1940. During this period, Saint-Exupéry continued his love affair with Jane Lawton, whom he had met in America while she was working for Walt Disney Studios| she had later obtained a position at the French consulate through Saint-Exupéry. Little is known about this secret relationship of the writer. "Many things touch me in you. One of them is undoubtedly security. It is to find you similar to yourself - as one undoubtedly also finds me. Life scatters me and leads me astray. And I cross deserts of silence. But I know how to recognize my own. I may be an eternal prodigal child - but I need so much to know myself in the world of safe havens. I travel in my thoughts and one evening I think I recognize the landscape - and the house between the trees - and I come to knock at the windows: - There! That's me! - But where did you come from, we thought you were dead! They didn't think I was dead at all, I still have my place at the table. [...] You see I am at war! We are the only ones, no doubt, in the "great recognition" aviation to know war and to lose crews. And I can, of course, not come back from it. [...] Because if I were God, I would not allow anguish. If I were God, I would allow a little more bliss. Do you know that I would love to see you again?
Attached is a telegram sent by Saint-Exupéry on August 24, 1939, from New York (Western Union letterhead), to Miss Lawton: "Have ticket for ++China but am obliged today to return to France because of international situation. Stop. Hope to see you in a fortnight in Las Vegas and thank you for an affection that has helped me so much. Believe my unalterable friendship "...
