[JARRY Nicolas (C. 1615-1666)]

Beautiful prayer book on vellum, illuminated by the best representative of 17th century French court calligraphy.
1 bl. f., [1 f.], 169 p., 2 bl. ff. Text on vellum, 14 lines per page, the Latin text in fine Roman script, the French text in italics, framing of the text with a fillet in gold and red, two-line initials in red, blue or gold, three-line initials in gold with floral motifs.
Detail. F. *1: illuminated title page. F. *2: miniature of the Annunciation. P. 1-20 : small Office of the Virgin. P. 21-52 : mass of the Virgin. P. 53-96: Litanies to the Virgin and various prayers. P. 97-156: Penitential Psalms, Litany of the Saints and various prayers. P. 157-169 : Litany of Saint Denis. Manuscript illustrated with an illuminated title (flowered crown), a full-page illumination in frontispiece (the Annunciation), bands with floral motifs, 5 gold lettering with floral motifs and initials in red, blue and gold. Nicolas JARRY answered the orders of eminent members of the Court. This volume is a perfect example of the finesse and elegance of his calligraphy. Although it is not mentioned in the list established by Baron Portalis in his study on "Nicolas Jarry et la calligraphie au XVIIe siècle" (Bulletin du bibliophile, 1896), it is to be compared to n° 60 of this list. Jarry employed two illuminators, Louis de Guernier (1614-1659) and Jean Petitot (1607-1691), both enamel painters and students of Jean Toutin de Blois. The miniature of the Annunciation opening this prayer book is closer to the work of the former. The floral decoration is in the style of Nicolas Robert, a painter of flowers who collaborated on Jarry's most famous work, La Guirlande de Julie. Joints redone, small restorations to the headpieces, some small stains in the margins, some leaves with small soiling, some loss of pigment on the face of the Virgin, some rubbing on the endpapers.
