Precious copy with the coat of arms of the princess of Lamballe (1749- 1792), heart friend of the queen Marie-Antoinette. This feminine provenance is one of the rarest of the Ancien Régime: "Madame de Lamballe's books are in small number and their condition is poor" (Ernest Quentin-Bauchart, who lists only six copies of this provenance). Widowed at the age of eighteen to the Prince of Lamballe, son of the Duke of Penthièvre, Marie-Thérèse-Louise de Savoie-Carignan (1749-1792) became superintendent of the household of Marie-Antoinette, with whom she developed a loyal friendship. Her name is forever associated with her tragic end. Arrested on August 10, 1792, she was a victim of the September massacres. Her head was carried through Paris on a pike and shown to the imprisoned queen.
