JAMES WILHEMS (ACTIF FIN XIXe DÉBUT XXe)
The Grand Canal in Venice Oil on canvas. Signed lower right.
Height : 46 cm - Width : 66 cm
In a gilded wooden frame.
This painting represents the entrance of the Grand Canal in Venice. A gondola in the foreground crosses the canal while a three-masted ship enters the city. San Giorgio Maggiore can be seen on the right, at the southern end of the Grand Canal, and the Campanile stands opposite.
The great luminosity of the painting renders the gentle atmosphere of Venice. As Boudin commented during his stay in Venice: "my great concern is always the sky and the color of the air. I realize that the sun does not gild the light of the city, but silvers it.
The usual painters have somewhat disfigured it by making it a country heated by the most intense and warmest suns, Venice on the contrary is of a gray color and the atmosphere is soft.
James Wilhems is a Nordic painter attracted by the luminosity of the Mediterranean landscapes that he painted a lot, in particular Martigues and Cassis
